Three fun facts about cherry pickers
Cherry pickers are one of those things we take for granted. They can be intimidating (especially if you're scared of heights). They have a pretty name that lends itself to images of bright summer days. However, cherry pickers are heavy machinery, and seldom look as good as they sound. They are, nonetheless, incredibly useful, versatile machines that serve a huge variety of functions. Here are some fun facts about cherry pickers that you might not know.
1. The cherry picker was a post-World War II invention
Given the name, it should come as no surprise that the cherry picker was invented by a man picking cherries. It all took place one summer shortly after the Second World War. The creative genius behind the cherry picker was one Jay M. Eitel who was (somewhat predictably) picking cherries and struggling to reach the fruit in the highest branches of the trees. He came up with the notion of a machine that could easily lift a fruit picker in the air so that they might snag the topmost cherries on the tree. Soon after he founded his company, Telsta Corp., and produced the first cherry pickers.
2. Shapes and sizes
One thing a lot of people don't realise about cherry pickers is that they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. They also have various uses, and are now not only used for picking fruit, but form the basis of most maintenance and construction operations.
Today, the boom lift is the most popular form of cherry picker, and it comes in two forms - the straight version, and the knuckle boom. Both are types of aerial lift used for cleaning the windows on tall buildings, particularly skyscrapers, and for building and construction work.
3. High up in the sky
The average cherry picker has a reach of approximately sixty-one metres, which is about two hundred feet. It is this impressive skyward reach that makes the cherry picker a favourite among business owners with employees working on tall buildings. With one elegantly simple machine, the cherry picker assures access to even the tallest reaches.
