Asbestos in Homes
Asbestos is a type of building material that was used in homes from the 1950s – 1990s. It is no longer used to build homes because it is considered unsafe. Worldwide, 67 countries and territories (including those in the European Union) have banned the use of asbestos. Exemptions for minor uses are permitted in some countries listed; however, all countries listed must have banned the use of all types of asbestos.
Asbestos, as dry material or embedded in hard material like concrete, readily produces dust and airborne particles when it is handled or ground up or the material is broken in some other way. Therefore, respirable asbestos fibres are released into the air easily, and in addition they stay airborne for a long time and travel long distances in the airstreams. Over time, the fibre burden in the lungs leads to serious health problems. The proven adverse health effects related to asbestos are caused by inhalation of asbestos dust. There is no convincing evidence that other routes of exposure can increase the risk of asbestos diseases. There is some evidence however that small fractions of ingested asbestos fibres may be able to penetrate the gastrointestinal tract.
You must never handle or try to remove asbestos yourself. Asbestos becomes harmful once it has been disturbed, as this causes the fibres to be released, which then may be inhaled. If you encounter what you suspect to be asbestos, you must not touch it. Instead, you should keep it isolated and seek specialist advice. If it is asbestos, then only professionals who are specifically trained to manage it should handle and remove it.
